Kanye+Will Oldham = WTF?
So Chicagoan Kanye seems to be really courting the…indie rock crowd? First a Peter, Bjorn and John sample on his mixtape, then a video and single w/ Daft Punk, and now a highly-produced, sanctioned video with Zach Galifianakis and Will Oldham/Bonnie “Prince” Billie? If you had told me a decade ago that Will Oldham, he of Palace and countless small studies in quiet desperation, would be appearing in sanctioned big-budget videos for hip-hop stars, my head would have exploded. It could still happen.
So here you go, Zach G. and Bonnie Prince Billie keeping it surreal for Kanye:

I mean, he clearly has a great sense of humor, despite the darkness of his own musical output. And his appreciation for hip-hop is one of the notoriously difficult interviewee’s favorite topics of discussion (read my attempt to interview him for the Metro here.) So this is far less bizarre than it might initially seem on Oldham’s end…but the heads-up from Kanye’s camp is still a bit bizarre.
Anyway, in honor of BPB’s newfound career starring in rap videos, I offer up his brilliant tribute to R. Kelly’s “Ignition”: Bonnie “Prince” Billie - “Ignition”
