      Ohio feels awkward and endearing. Lazy and earnest. Charming and repulsive; lonely but loving.

      I spent a week there recently, in rural Ohio where I lived for a couple years. I came home with my feelings about the place captured through the scratchy lens of my cellphone camera.

      Sometimes I feel like an anthropologist there. It was my home, but I was an outsider. I felt connected to many people there, but they were outsiders, too. Even the ones who grew up there.

      Scott MacDonald is a photographer on the Central Coast of California. He works on staff at a daily newspaper, The Salinas Californian, and lives in San Jose. His first photos were poorly exposed black and whites of punk rock bands in Pennsylvania, the state and scene from which he hails. Although old enough to be legitimately concerned about admitting his age, he still rides a skateboard, plays drums loudly and daydreams about the next issue of his zine, which he hasn't produced since 1996.         scott's the guy that i always pine for visits from and really sad after he goes. face to face conversations with him are the best and watching him hold a camera is intimidating and comforting all at once. maybe that's the definition of inspiring. he's a good dude.
