Thanks for this piece. It is a nicely weighted brush on the reality of racism in Canada in particular but North America in general.

Years ago I read a book about racism in Canadian schools, Under the Gaze - Learning to be Black in a White Society, that changed my romanticized view of Canada's race relations.

So the work continues. I am grateful for your take on things.

You know, my wife is Chinese, and I think I cringed during The Forbidden Kingdom more than she did, hahaha.

I am sick of things like:
- a non-Latina actress getting the sole Latina role on season 4 of the L word (Papi) for a show set in LOS ANGELES

- people actually thinking Angelina darkening her skin was acceptable in place of actually finding a woman of colour for the Marianne Pearl story

etc.

But then again, I think Hollywood responds to what American demands, and white Americans still just won't go to the movies in the same numbers unless a white guy/gal is starring in it.

Something to add to the undemocratic American voting system, which plays into the race theme mentioned in your piece, is the Supreme Court ruling a few weeks back regarding Indiana's voter ID laws. The ruling, requiring a government issued ID in order to vote, will disenfranchise scores of minority and low-income voters, a popular strategy of the GOP.

I just want to add that I think this whole Jeremiah Wright to-do is a bunch of nonsense, though I concede the political relevance (I will not concede that there was neccessarily anything wrong with what he said). Wright´s recent ´revival´ at the Press Club gave Obama the opportunity to severe ties with him, this should be done. If the press decides to beat the dead horse, it may remain relevant.
I also believe that you underestimate Obama if you think that something like this will kill him in such an election. Real issues also matter.

I get your obsession, which may have ended since this comment falls nearly a year after your post. All of their albums are back, once again, in exclusive, extended play on my iPod.

RFTC are, overall, my least fave as well but there are a few songs that really shine in a Hot Snakes kind of way on Scream, Dracula, Scream...if you want to give this one more chance.

There are Gazillians of groups who think they got it going on.Their styles are bland, stereotype music.Rapp music when compared to beautiful songs are bland.Where have our musical taste buds gone? Are we at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to good, tasteful music that we settle for the highest drop of water in that very same barrel? If there is one group out here that is different that I've heard but have not seen it's a group or artist called Zkunk.Fandamntastic!I heard two songs on the internet which turned out to be the Buzz for Richland College that month. No one can get a copy. The only thing I got out of the music programmer was that the album was coming out this summer.I collect music,I am the Simon Cowell of sound and this music totally sets itself apart from the rest. This is the group or artist record companies would hand over the blank checks to.Remember I heard it first and will keep you posted.

For you to dismiss this so easily speaks to the unreality that so many Obama supporters are living in; check out the poll numbers stacking up Obama vs. McCain- http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls/
These numbers are really scary, and what if McCain's good relations with the media continue into the general?
How many Jeremiah Wrights does Obama have? Will he deal with them in a similarly imprudent fashion?
I hope you're right, but this arrogance doesn't translate to the reality of American politics.

This is all silliness. It's only May 6. And in the most recent CBS/NYTimes poll Obama is up by 11% over McCain! Think about that. McCain has had to deal with *no* negative press at all & Obama hasn't got his bump yet from becoming the nominee. If you factor in those two things his lead is more like 20%. I think this will be a blow out and people will look back at all of the silliness about Jeremiah Wright as just that, silliness. It's the media trying to create a story where there is none. This election will be a referendum on the Bush presidency and McCain will lose (and lose big) because of that.

An update: proving the local adage that what the government gives with one hand it takes away with the other, the government just announced a substantial increase in prices, particularly for fuel, transportation and education:

http://arabist.net/arabawy/2008/05/05/4292/

The ruling party apparently took a cue from the clear lack of a popular response to the call for a general strike from Facebook activists yesterday. More on that in a subsequent post.

Also, a quick correction: the $2/day poverty line is a standard from the IMF, not the UN.

Relative to the status quo I am pro-immigration but we should acknowledge that immigration is one of the reasons that the wages of the working class have stagnated. The ability to organize cannot change the fact that immigrants compete with Americans for jobs.

If you argue for citizenship for all immigrants currently here, I think it is incumbent on you to provide an outline of a long-term immigration policy. Should we set any limits on immigration, if so, what are they? ie. How many new immigrants do we allow every year and how do we select them? If not, are you willing to accept the unemployment this will cause among low skilled Americans?

Jesse Blade Snider took a big risk covering his dad's hit " We're not gonna take it" but it paid off. However I think that Crosby Loggins is the only one with talent, what do you think

The 2nd ammendment isn't the Constitutions biggest defect, it's what protects the rest of the Ammendments. Most of you folks you have commented have mentioned how gun control leaves innocent people defenseless against thieves rapists and killers but the 2nd Ammendment serve another purpose as well, to protect the people from an over powerful government. History has shown that when brutal dictators (ie. Hitler, Stalin) have wanted to oppress the subjects the first thing they do is enact gun control laws stripping people of their ability to defend themselves. The 2nd Ammendment guarantees that something like that could never happen in the United States.

Seriously, do you really want to live in a place where only criminals and the government are armed?

Matt, I'm sorry about your friend but the numbers don't lie, gun control wouldn't have prevented her tragic death and may actually lead to more tragic deaths at the hands of criminals who have no regard for the law.

I'm not sure what response I expected. You needn't feel obliged to provide "The Answer."

I guess my second paragraph is just me crying out, I wish I had a better idea of what it is I don't know about race (for the sake of knowledge and so that I can avoid being an ass.) I probably shouldn't worry much about what's not being represented by intellectuals/activists because I haven't made the effort to learn too much about what is. But to give an analogy... I was just reading a series of essays about the discipline of sociology, by sociologists. Something to keep in mind while reading these essays is: the voices of some sociologists and non-sociologists are left out for particular reasons.

My question in the first paragraph is me crying out, "what should politicians and/or regular people do to reduce racism and racial inequality?"

Does all my uncertainty make me a useless intellectual even if my heart is in the right place? (Don't answer)

Michael -- I can make a lot of assumptions about what you meant, but instead I will just say I am not sure what you mean by the range of experience that isn't represented. Represented where? And what experiences? I am just interested in what you mean.

Obama called for a national conversation about race. This sounds like a good idea - it sounds almost impossible to oppose - yet, I don't really know who should be talking to who, what institutions should be involved, etc.

Put societies problems aside, I don't even know how to overcome gaps in my own understanding of race. I can read what intellectuals and activists have written, but I really want to know the whole complex range of experience and of regular people which I feel is not represented.

Slight addendum: I want to make sure to note the work of poet and historian Dr. Afua Cooper. She is a West Indian immigrant who has made telling the story of Canada part of her life's work. Her book _The Hanging of Angelique_ was a finalist for the prestigious Governor General's Award for Non-Fiction. It tells the story of the trial and torture of Angelique, a Black slave accused in the 18th century of starting the fire that burned much of Montreal. The story is timely as we explore Black Canadian history and what it means to extraction confessions from so-called terrorists.

Slight addendum: I want to make sure that the work of poet and historian Dr. Afua Cooper is mentioned as well. Her book The Hanging of Angelique (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060127.bkchp0128/BNStory/SpecialEvents/) was short-listed for Governor General's Award for non-fiction in 2006. The story is a timely one: Angelique, a Black slave in Montreal, was accused to setting a fired that burned a lot of Montreal down. She refused to confess, so she was tortured, repeatedly. Cooper is yet another example of a talented writer who is trying to ensure the story of Black Canada is told.

Out of curiosity, did you ever find out what happened to the ATA customers? When an airline bites the dust, what happens to the people who had booked flights with them?
