CALL FOR CONTRIBUTORS
Is Greater Than, an online magazine receiving 6000-8000 visitors monthly, is looking for your short fiction, creative nonfiction and personal narratives, as well as articles, interviews and opinion pieces that examine culture in its many permutations–literature, music, art, film and much more. We pride ourselves on celebrating the unknown and the emerging, the people and topics that are deserving of closer consideration. We’re not opposed to turning the microscope onto pop culture, but that isn’t our focus. We’re not looking to “win the morning” with linkbait: it’s a big world out there, and there are many intriguing stories to tell.
Specifically, What are you looking for?
As noted before, we’re looking for short fiction, creative nonfiction and personal narratives under 2000 words. Our tastes are varied–everything from brutal realism to tales of the fantastic–but first and foremost, we’re looking for polished work with a strong and unique voice.
We’re also looking for articles, interviews, and essays on culture, running 800-1200 words. We’re looking for both pitches and finished pieces.
We also will run monthly columns by a handful of contributors. If you have a pitch for a recurring column on any aspect of culture, drop us a line.
What are you not looking for?
In the past, Is Greater Than has devoted much of its focus to politics and activism; though we won’t avoid the political components of culture as we move forward, we’re political discussion to those who are already doing it better than we ever will. Instead, we’re going to focus on being the best damn culture and literary site that we can be.
We’re looking for strong, well-argued opinions, but we’re not looking for rants. If you’re looking for a platform from which to rant, might we suggest WordPress, or perhaps Twitter.
Do you pay?
There’s nothing we would love to be able to do more than pay our contributors and editors; unfortunately, the site barely makes enough to cover hosting costs. We can offer an engaged, loyal readership, a bio with links back to your projects, our undying gratitude, and possibly other perks down the line.
Do you run reprints?
Depends. Drop us a line if you’ve got work that has been published elsewhere, but that you believe would be a good fit for Is Greater Than.
Who owns the work?
You do, forever. We only reserve the right to edit your work for clarity and grammar, publish it on Is Greater Than, and possibly syndicate it through content partners in the future.
Interested?
Great! Please take a look at our writer’s guidelines, and submit your work to our online submissions manager.
