Is Greater Than wants your submissions, your pitches, your thoughts and half-formed ideas that will become well-written, focused, and insightful articles, essays, and interviews with exemplary independent artists, musicians, writers, bloggers, activists, and thinkers of our times.
Specifically, What are you looking for?
There’s many answers to that question. Since this is a web publication, our formats are a bit more fluid than print, but because people are accustomed to reading things in certain ways, we do follow certain formats. We’re looking for insightful, sourced, provocative articles with a strong independent vision and a respect to ye olde gray journalistic ideals. We’re looking for reviews and thought pieces about independent culture and the unheralded that deserve broader recognition. We won’t turn down a brilliant piece of pop-culture analysis, but we’re also not looking to perpetuate the celebrity-gossip feedback loop. We’re looking for direct interviews with the most interesting folks of our time–musicians and writers, activists and bloggers, artists and designers.
How many words do you want me to crank out?
Well, that depends, and though we are big fans of the 8000-word muckraking piece, the realities of online readership demands that you keep it short and punchy. A multiple-sourced, investigative article should run 1200-2000 words at the absolute most, a review or a think piece 350-750, and an interview and profile 500-800. A good, thought out blog post? 250-300. Again, these are not hard rules, but a good guideline for what we’re looking for.
Do you compensate your contributors?
Unfortunately, not at this time. We hope to compensate contributors in the near future, but for now, the vagaries of the economics of online content makes that impossible. We can say that contributions will be repaid in gratitude, prominent links back to your own projects and/or websites, and a readership of over 4,000 unique visitors a month.
